About Vaughan Stanger

Fifteen years ago, Vaughan began setting himself homework. Since then, he has seen his stories published in End of an Aeon, Daily Science Fiction, Nature Futures, Music for Another World, Postscripts and Interzone, amongst others. He's also seen stories translated into Polish for Nowa Fantastyka, Hebrew for Mercury, and Danish for Proxima. Needless to say, he's working on a novel. Like most writers, he loves cats. But so far he has resisted the siren call of the cute little brown creature that howls outside his front door. For news, please visit Vaughan's website at http://www.vaughanstanger.com

8 . Dying of the Light
by Vaughan Stanger
Science Fiction, 9 pages
Ever pondered Pascal's Wager? This story was originally published as "TLP" in Hub (2007). Tangent Online Review (May 2007): "The story works well at its flash or almost-flash length; the Astronaut’s introspection doesn’t feel rushed, but the story doesn’t weigh itself down with too much verbiage. In fact, that brevity serves to accent the short amount of time the Astronaut is sure he has left, giving an extra edge to the indecision over his belief."

11 . String-Driven Thing

12 . The English Dead
by Vaughan Stanger
Science Fiction, 21 pages
Who was first to climb to the top of the world? Two centuries after a fatal fall, there is only one way to find out. But is the price worth paying? Review in The Fix (14/1/08): “The English Dead” is an excellent story and fundamentally good SF; the central conceit, cloning historical figures, is not new, but its application is fresh. The climbing lingo reads authentically to a layman like myself. The obsessions of the tale’s central characters are well-portrayed, informing their decisions and actions as they move towards a convincing conclusion.
13 . Stars in Her Eyes
by Vaughan Stanger

Still dreaming of First Contact? Honourable Mention and Year's Summation mention in the 2008 Dozois Doorstep.

17 . First and Third
by Vaughan Stanger
Science Fiction, 30 pages
"Joe loves Maisie, even though she's dead. He keeps her mind alive, downloaded ... He wants to keep her going until she achieves something called Rapture ... He makes a living on Mars repairing robots, but he's on the run from the law. Things get more complicated after that. Joe and Maisie are characters you'll like and that's enough for any story. From the review of Postscripts 26/27 "Unfit for Eden" at SF Revu by Sam Tomaino (26 March 2012).
18 . Star in a Glass
by Vaughan Stanger
Science Fiction, 28 pages
Star in a Glass features a prog-metal-ballet band, telepathy-inducing drugs, high-energy astronomy and weird nuclear physics. What, you need to know more? Meredith Wiggins (The Future Fire) wrote: "there was one (story) in particular which seemed to create a whole world through suggestion, and left me with the fervent hope that it will be expanded into a full length novel at some point. ‘Star in a Glass’ by Vaughan Stanger is the story of the re-forming of a ‘prog-metal-ballet’ band in the near future." ... "the details Stanger intersperses within the tantrums and trials of the band create a richly textured (if somewhat gritty) world; one which I would personally love to visit again."
